Youth Sailing School at CSC
The CSC sailing school offers 4, one-week long sailing sessions for July 2024. Enrolling your 8 - 14 yr. old child in our programs will allow them to work towards a CANSail level through the Ontario Sailing Association.
You do not need to be a member to enrol in our sailing school.
CSC boasts a rich history of long standing traditions of sailing on the picturesque waters of Lake Couchiching with an optimal location on Pumpkin Bay for acquiring life long sailing skills. Our instructors are all fully qualified CanSail Instructors, and the school possesses a fleet of beginner-friendly sailboats with high safety standards, accompanied by motorised coach boats to maximize sailors’ safety.
Your child will not only learn to sail with confidence but will also engage in enjoyable activities within a safe environment. Our coaches are not your typical camp instructors; they have undergone extensive training as sailors and obtained national instructor certification through Sail Canada. This certification encompasses first aid, water safety, teaching, lesson planning, leadership, and, most importantly, sailing.
Following Sail Canada's CANSail programming, our instructors strive to maximise time on the water, focusing on practical sailing, sailing theory, rigging, and boat maintenance. What sets our instructors apart is their hands-on approach to teaching, emphasising demonstration over verbal instruction and testing.
A variety of themes will be incorporated to maximise fun during the weeks of Sailing School which promise to be the highlight of your child's summer. The week will be capped off with a small celebration commemorating all of our sailors’ successes.
CSC Sailing School will utilise the CANSail program.
What is CANsail?
CANSail is a progressive set of learn-to-sail standards designed to impart sailors with a strong foundation in core skills. The program enables sailors to learn and advance in various types of boats while emphasising the consolidation of essential skills and experiences before tackling more complex ones.
iCANSail/CANSail 1 - Learn to Sail:
Many young sailors commence their journey by completing the iCANSail checklist. This initial phase focuses on developing comfort in and around water, mastering basic sail controls, and fostering teamwork. In some instances, sailors may simultaneously begin working on their CANSail 1 checklist. This beginner level is ideal for first-time sailors, imparting fundamental sailing skills in small, double-handed boats. It provides a fun and secure introduction to basic sailing, with each session accommodating 8 sailors.
